Dear Parents and Caregivers:

The 2017-18 school year is here and Painesville City Schools staff has exciting plans and high expectations for your child’s learning.  We know that you also have many hopes and dreams for your child’s success in school and beyond.

To make sure those hopes and dreams are realized, we want to ask for your commitment to making sure your child attends school every day possible this year. The evidence is clear: children with good attendance are more likely to be successful in school. High attendance rates are linked to high student achievement.  This is true for every grade – elementary, middle, and high school students.

Every day counts. Missing school even 10% of the time has a significant negative impact on reading and math achievement as children progress through school.

The state of Ohio put a new law (HB 410) into effect beginning this school year with expectations of attendance for all students.  

Painesville City Schools adopted this policy and has changed all handbooks and guidelines to reflect this. Please review this with your son/daughter and make sure they are aware of the changes and understand the process that will be followed.

Attendance Definitions:

• Habitual Truant 
  • Absent 30 or more consecutive hours without a legitimate excuse
  • Absent 42 or more hours in one school month without a legitimate excuse
  • Absent 72 or more hours  in one school year without a legitimate excuse

• Excessive Absenteeism
  • Absent 38 or more hours in one school month with or without a legitimate excuse
  • Absent 65 or more hours in one school year with or without a legitimate excuse

• Chronic Absenteeism
  • Absent 92 or more hours with or without a legitimate excuse

If your student meets the definition of habitual truant, the district will:

• assign the student to an absence intervention team.
• attempt to secure parent participation on the absence intervention team.
• develop an absence intervention plan.
• If the student does not make progress on the plan or continues to be excessively absent, the district may file a complaint in the juvenile court.

If your student meets the definition of excessive absenteeism, the district will:

• notify the family in WRITING
• The student will follow the district’s plan for absence intervention.
• The student and family may be referred to community resources.

Para asegurarse de que esas esperanzas y sueños se realicen, queremos pedirle su compromiso de asegurar que su hijo asista a la escuela todos los días posibles este año. La evidencia es clara: los niños con buena asistencia tienen más probabilidades de tener éxito en la escuela.   • En ausencia de 92 o más horas con o sin una excusa legítima

Si su hijo/a cae en la definición de ausente habitual, el distrito:

• Asignará al estudiante un equipo de intervención de ausencia.
• Intentara asegurar la participación de los padres en el equipo de intervención de ausencia.
• Desarrollara un plan de intervención de ausencia.
• Si el estudiante no progresa en el plan o continúa excesivamente ausente, el distrito puede presentar una queja en la corte juvenil.

Si su hijo/a cae en la definición de ausentismo excesivo, el distrito:

• Notificará a la familia por ESCRITO.
• El estudiante seguirá el plan del distrito para intervención de ausencia.
• El estudiante y la familia pueden ser referidos a recursos comunitarios.
