Congratulations to Harvey High School tenth-grader Leima Zavala Soto, who was selected as the next PCLS W-o-W! (Writer-of-the-Week). Her English Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Schatz, nominated Leima’s news account of the reaction of Robert F. Kennedy to the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., because “She used factual information from a video recording of Kennedy giving his speech as well as including pertinent background information on Dr. King and his legacy of promoting nonviolence. She included the reaction of the crowd in the video and gave her interpretation of what the event meant to the current situation in that time period for America. She worked diligently on this assignment over two days in class and her efforts showed in the quality of her finished piece.” Leima was presented with a certificate of achievement and allowed to choose a prize from the Writer’s Toolbox.
The PCLS Curriculum Department/Teaching and Learning Team developed the W-o-W! program to recognize the hard work and creativity of PCLS students. In an effort to help build a community of writers, the team encourages schools to display the W-o-W’s work and asks teachers to use the W-o-W’s work as part of their writing instruction. Leima will be invited to read her news account at an upcoming board of education meeting.
