Congratulations to Heritage Middle School sixth-grader Micah Cannon, who was selected as the next PCLS W-o-W! (Writer-of-the-Week). Language arts teacher, Mrs. Cathy Naughton, submitted his essay because “Micah was able to take several readings, a novel, a poem and several nonfiction articles and combine them to make a well-written essay. He used specific textual examples and paraphrasing to show his understanding of the post Civil War oppression of African Americans. His writing and understanding have also led to many unique conversations in class as we continued to read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor.” Micah was presented with a certificate of achievement and allowed to choose a prize from the Writer’s Toolbox
His essay can be viewed below.
The PCLS Curriculum Department/Teaching and Learning Team developed the W-o-W! program to recognize the hard work and creativity of PCLS students. In an effort to help build a community of writers, the team encourages schools to display the W-o-W’s work and asks teachers to use the W-o-W’s work as part of their writing instruction. Micah will be invited to read his essay at an upcoming board of education meeting.
